Abstract

The learning of Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) at Petra Christian University (UK Petra) has been conducted since 2011 where foreign students studying BIPA are participants of Darmasiswa Program held by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia. However, along with many international programs organized by UK Petra, many foreign students come to study BIPA in a very short time. Foreign students who join BIPA learning activities in a short time usually want to learn Bahasa Indonesia to be able to communicate daily with Indonesian people. To achieve this goal, foreign students need to acquire Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills (BICS. This paper will discuss the effectiveness of informal language used in BIPA learning in UK Petra by interviewing the teachers and the learners. The results show that foreign students felt more confident in communicating because they could immediately practice what they learned. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of informal language is effective in BIPA learning.
