Abstract

This research aims to analyze and understand the representation of the feminist struggle, how the main character fights for gender equality as reflected in the film Little Women (2019) directed by Greta Gerwig, and identify the type of feminism in the film. Based on the research objectives, the researcher wants to answer the question "How does the main character struggle in fighting for gender equality in the film Little Women (2019)?" and "What kind of feminism is in the 2019 film Little Women?". This film is an adaptation of the classic novel by Louisa May Alcott and depicts the lives of the four March sisters who fought against gender norms and social injustice in the United States in the 19th century. The research is qualitative, using feminist and sociological approaches to explore how female characters, especially the main character, Jo March, in the film, try to achieve gender equality and freedom in a patriarchal social and cultural context. Through narrative and character analysis, this research identifies critical themes such as personal autonomy, career aspirations, and complex family dynamics, all contributing to feminist discourse. The research results show that the film Little Women reflects women's struggles in the past and provides a relevant reflection on contemporary gender issues. Therefore, this research strengthens our understanding of the importance of feminist representation in the media and its contribution to social awareness and cultural change.
