AN ANALYSIS OF ILLOCUTIONARY SPEECH ACTS IN THE JOHN OSBORNE PLAY: LOOK BACK IN ANGER
Abstract
Every human being has the ability to speak and understand other human through language. Speaking in a language requires the implementation of speech acts, which include referring and predicting as well as actions. The purpose of this analysis is to identify the types and functions of illocutionary speech acts contained in John Osborne Play Look Back in Anger based on the theory of Searle (1976) and Leech (1983). This research uses the Pragmatics approach. This research uses qualitative research method. The data source of this research is taken from the utterances made by the characters in the John Osborne Play: Look Back in Anger. The data is in the form of phrases, clauses, and sentences spoken by the characters. The researcher managed to find utterances by the characters in the John Osborne play: Look Back in Anger. The researcher analyzed the utterance and found 39 data types of illocutionary speech acts such as Representative, Directive, Expressive, Commissive, and Declarative. and 39 data functions of illocutionary speech acts such as Competitive, Convivial, Collaborative, and Conflictive.
