Abstract

Babad Mangkubumi is one of the ancient manuscripts which contains the history and legend of the life of Sultan Mangkubumi, one of the important figures in Javanese history. This study aims to compare the story of Sultan Mangkubumi in the old manuscript of Babad Mangkubumi with a book entitled Yogyakarta Under Sultan Mangkubumi 1749-1792 belonging to M.C Ricklefs. The method used in this study focuses on the literary reception method using Wolfgang Iser's theory. It compares the Self-Image of Sultan Mangkubumi in the contents of the Babad Mangkubumi manuscript with the book Yogyakarta Under Sultan Mangkubumi 1742-1792, with Ricklefs as the repertoire in this analysis. This analysis will produce data findings in the form of questions that arise from reading between Ricklefs as a reader and Babad Mangkubumi as his reader. Skepticism towards Sultan Mangkubumi that the self-image written in the Babad Mangkubumi text does not fully correspond to the historical perspective written in Ricklefs' book Yogyakarta Under Sultan Mangkubumi 1742-1792. This research opens up the possibility for other researchers who carry out the same analysis in this study, and the hope is that it can become a reference source for other researchers who are researching the object of a literary work of the Babad Mangkubumi manuscript.
