News Frame of VOA Indonesia and CNN Indonesia on Pro-Palestine Student Demonstration in America

Abstract

The military aggression carried out by Israel in Gaza triggered demonstrations to challenge the action. Demonstrations took place in the United States as a solidarity movement for Palestine which was driven by students from various campuses in the United States. There was tension between the pro-Palestinian student demonstrators and the campus, the police and tension with the pro-Israeli masses. This student demonstration attracted the attention of various public figures in America and internationally, so that media such as VOA Indonesia and CNN Indonesia tried to cover this news. The purpose of this study is to analyze how VOA Indonesia and CNN Indonesia frame the Pro-Palestinian student demonstration movement in the United States. The research method used in this study is qualitative descriptive research with the framing analysis model of Zhongdang Pan and Gerald M. Kosicki. The object of research used in this study was news from VOA Indonesia and CNN Indonesia. The results of this study indicate that the VOA Indonesia media framed the Pro-Palestinian student demonstration movement with an intimidating or anti-Semitic movement. This can be seen from 2 VOA Indonesia Headlines that construct news from the perspective of figures who oppose the pro-Palestinian student demonstrations, such as Republican Senators and the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. In comparison, CNN Indonesia tends to frame them more as a movement or action to defend Palestine. CNN Indonesia constructs news based on the perspective of pro-Palestinian figures such as Senator Bernie Sanders. CNN Indonesia also takes the perspective of international relations observers from Indonesia. The conclusion of this research is that VOA Indonesia and CNN Indonesia media construct news by using phrases or constructing narratives in accordance with their media ideology.
