The Role of Interpersonal Communication in Addiction Rehabilitation: A Study of Counselor-Patient Interactions at National Narcotics Agency of Yogyakarta

Abstract

The increasing prevalence of drug abuse in Indonesia, as reflected in numerous media reports, highlights the rising number of drug users. This research aims to explore and analyze the interpersonal communication process between addiction counselors and drug patients undergoing rehabilitation at the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) in the Yogyakarta Special Region. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the study delves into the phenomenon in depth. Data collection methods include interviews with addiction counselors and patients, as well as observation and documentation. The findings reveal that effective interpersonal communication between counselors and patients plays a crucial role in facilitating behavioral change and helping patients overcome addiction. Counselors succeed in creating a safe and empathetic environment, which encourages patients to be open and honest. Their non-judgmental, empathetic approach fosters a sense of security and self-confidence, enabling patients to tackle the challenges of addiction more effectively. Counselors also provide emotional support, helping patients adopt a positive perspective on rehabilitation. By positioning themselves as equals, counselors make patients feel comfortable sharing their struggles without fear of judgment. The interpersonal communication process observed in this context consists of five key qualities of effective interpersonal communication namely openness, empathy, supportiveness, positiveness, and equality.
