Abstract

The development of alternative sources of omega-3 that are economical and sustainable is a major concern in the fisheries and livestock sectors to support human health. Omega-3 is an essential fatty acid that is necessary for the health of the human body. The availability of affordable sources of omega-3 is a challenge in every effort to improve community nutrition through the intake of nutritious food sources. Therefore, this community service project focuses on the application of high-lipid feed derived from Aurantiochytrium microalgae biomass, isolated from mangrove forests in Indonesia, as a cheap source of omega-3 for the residents of Wukirsari, Imogiri, Bantul. Aurantiochytrium microalgae are known to produce fatty acids of high economic value, including omega-3. The UAD team has succeeded in isolating microalgae cells from various Indonesian mangrove forests and producing lab-scale biomass. The existing feed is mixed with microalgae biomass. Next, feed application was applied to catfish cultivation in Wukirsari Village. With this effort, it is hoped that high lipid feed from Aurantiochytrium microalgae will be able to improve the quality of catfish meat content, compared to catfish fed standard feed. The use of this feed also shows the potential to improve the nutritional quality of fisheries and livestock, while providing a sustainable solution to the problem of dependence on increasingly limited traditional omega-3 sources.
