Nutritional Intake and Physical Activity among Obese Women Based on Fat Mass and Obesity-Associated (FTO) rs9939609 Polymorphism

Abstract

Background: Genetic is one of the factors in obesity. Fat Mass and Obesity-Related (FTO) rs9939609 is one of the genes that is widely discussed in relation to obesity. This research compared the nutritional intake and physical activity among groups of obese young women with different FTO rs9939609 variants.

Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. The participants/subjects in this research were 38 obese women living in Bandung, Indonesia. Subject characteristic and nutritional status (age, education, occupation, body mass index (BMI), waist-hip ratio (WHR), total body fat, and visceral fat) data were collected/ calculated. The FTO rs9939609 variant was tested through polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Nutrient intake was assessed using a 2x24 h Food Recall questionnaire, and physical activity was assessed using the Physical Activity Level (PAL) questionnaire. An independent t-test was used to see differences in nutrient intake and physical activity among subjects with FTO rs9939609 AA/TA and TT variants.

Results: Twenty-two (57.9%) subjects had the FTO rss9939609 AA/TA variant, and 16 (42.1%) had the TT variant. Results showed that nutrient intake and physical activity did not differ between subjects (P>0.05) with the FTO AA/TA and TT variants.

Conclusion: The result suggests no differences in nutrient intake and physical activity between the subject groups with the FTO AA/TA and TT variants.
