Increasing student literacy on earthquake and volcano eruption disaster preparedness through educational video media in elementary school in the Cangkringan area of Yogyakarta
Abstract
Background: Cangkringan is one of the sub-districts of Sleman Regency, DIY, which is located below the slopes of Mount Merapi. The current status of Mount Merapi is at Level III or Alert for potential disasters. Regarding the massive activity of Mount Merapi, the Regent of Sleman issued a circular regarding an appeal to stop community activities in the rivers that originate from Merapi. Children are one of the most vulnerable groups during and after disasters, including elementary school children. The purpose of this community service is to increase elementary school students' knowledge about disaster preparedness in the form of safety measures and how to respond when a disaster occurs.
Method: Providing health education through educational video media and simulations related to disaster preparedness for volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.
Results: The average knowledge of students before being given health education was 7.76 and after being given health education, students' knowledge increased significantly to 8.42. The results of the Wilcoxon test obtained a p-value <α (0.000 <0.05).
Conclusion: There is an increase in knowledge before and after being given health education about earthquake and volcanic eruption disaster preparedness through educational videos for elementary school students.
