Abstract

The uptake of modern contraception among women of reproductive age in Indonesia is influenced by a range of socio-cultural factors, which can be complex to navigate. This study aims to identify and analyse these factors through a systematic literature review, with the intention of offering insights that could contribute to a better understanding of the topic. A comprehensive literature search was conducted on major electronic databases, resulting in 15 articles meeting the inclusion criteria. The review revealed that the main factors influencing modern contraception use include education level, economic status, access to health services, social and family norms, and knowledge about contraception. Higher education levels and better economic status positively correlate with modern contraception use. Access to adequate health services and information also plays a crucial role. Social norms, including the role of husbands and family, as well as geographical factors have significant influence. These findings highlight the importance of a holistic approach in increasing modern contraception use in Indonesia, considering the socio-cultural diversity. Effective strategies should encompass improving education, economic empowerment, enhancing access to health services, and efforts to change inhibiting social norms. The findings of this research provide a foundation for the development of family planning policies and programmes that are more responsive to the socio-cultural context in Indonesia
