Abstract

Background: The stone-carving industry contributes greatly to the local economy, but if not managed properly, it can endanger public health and the environment. The stone carving industry's relocation policy aims to reduce negative health and environmental impacts.

Methods: We used a cross-sectional, mixed-method study design to examine the impact of the stone-carving industry on the health of workers, communities, and the environment through quantitative studies. We also conducted qualitative studies to understand the reactions of the industry's affected workers and communities. We investigated the incidence of health problems by work location, length of employment, and other demographic characteristics.

Results: The proportion of stone carvers suffering from hypertension was 43.3% in Sedayu (relocation) and was 53.3% in Banyudono (non-relocation). Sensorineural impairment was 43.3% in Sedayu, which was higher than in Banyudono (23.3% and 26.7%). The proportion of ARI in Sedayu (43.3%) was higher than in Banyudono (3.3%). The proportion of respiratory and hearing problems was higher in the industrial center than in residential area.

Conclusion: The relocation policy of the stone carving industry has a health impact on workers, communities, and the environment. It is necessary to enforce environmental and OHS aspects to reduce the negative impacts by the industry.
