An Analysis Of Character Education Values In A Bear Called Paddington (2016) By Michael Bond

Abstract


Novels can be one of the teaching materials that can provide many benefits, one of which is teaching about the value of character education because the stories in novels are close to human life. Many studies have analyzed the content of character education values in children's novels with the educational aim of making it easier for teachers to teach educational values to students so that they can use novels as teaching materials in class. In this study, three research points focus on the Novel A Bear Called Paddington by Michael Bond, namely finding characters and characterizations, analyzing character education and the perceptions of junior high school teachers regarding the novel. In analyzing character education, this research focuses on the value of character education established by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture which has 18 values. Research using qualitative methods examines books and interviews teachers. The results of the research show that the novel A Bear Called Paddington by Michael Bond has 16 character education values, including Social Care, Creative, Friendly, Curiosity, Responsibility, Hard Work, Appreciating Achievement, Love Peace, Tolerance, Like to Read, Religious, Honest, Discipline, Creative, Independence, Democratic, Love Homeland. These values are following the character education values contained in English Middle School textbooks.
