Analyzing “Nggak Bisa Bahasa Inggris” expression from society perspective on Instagram and X

Abstract


This research was conducted to analyze the language expression of the phrase “Nggak Bisa Bahasa Inggris" found on social media of Instagram and X (formerly known as Twitter) and to see it from society perspective on reasons why they are unable to speak English. Therefore, this study employed Descriptive Qualitative method. The data were analyzed using Rajitha and Alamelu (2023) speaking anxiety theory where researcher identify patterns in the data and correspond to the category of language factors such as grammar, vocabulary, fluency or fear of negative evaluation such as being laughed at. After the data were identified, then they were presented in the order of categorization: Statement, Opinion, Suggestion and Miscommunication. The findings noted as 30 expressions consisted of 8 Statements, 10 Opinions, 8 Suggestion and 4 Miscommunications. Eventually, it can be concluded that the reasons why some Indonesians are unable speaking English are due to pressure of society, don't know how to study, shy, insecure, wrong mindset that regard English as celebrity's language, English is difficult to learn, low vocabulary, also lack in practice. On the contrary, most Indonesian perceive that it is a good skill to widen opportunity especially in work and academic, a need of basic skill as well, especially in this globalization era.
