Students habits in learning EFL: Factors of study habits in students learning motivation in EFL

Abstract


It is important for students to understand that learning a foreign language brings a variety of benefits to students, including cross-cultural communication ability, broad career opportunities, in-depth understanding of the culture, as well as cognitive skill development. This study aimed at investigating on factors affecting the habits of universities students towards learning English as a foreign language. Study habits are one of the factors that affect learning outcomes. Learning habits are a way or technique that stays with students when receiving lessons, reading books, doing assignments, and setting time to complete activities. The researcher focused on collecting data related to the experience of students learning habits in learning English as a foreign language, which related to students' motivation in learning EFL. The subject of this research are 30 universities students in the age range of 19-24 years old. The method used in this research is descriptive statistics method. The researcher collect data by using questionnaire as the instrument to measure students’ learning habits. After obtaining data from the questionnaire, the researcher measured the data using a Guttman scale.  Respondents had to answer "yes" or "no" to dichotomous questions that represented their experiences. "Yes" answers were given a value of 1, while "No" answers were given a value of 0. To calculate the data results, the researcher analyzed the data by calculating the Mean of each four themes in the questionnaire. Furthermore, the statistical data from the questionnaire was analyzed descriptively to find conclusions. The results shows that students in the city of Yogyakarta are still low in the habit of learning English as a second language due to, one of them, a lack of building motivation in learning EFL, this is due to several supporting study habits factors.
